Introduction / History

The Xerente are an Indigenous people living mainly in the state of Tocantins in Brazil. They belong to the Jê linguistic family and traditionally lived in the cerrado region of central Brazil.

Historically, the Xerente experienced pressure from colonization, ranching expansion, and land disputes. Despite these challenges, they preserved much of their language, social structure, and ceremonial traditions.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Xerente communities practice agriculture, fishing, and handicraft production. Villages maintain strong family structures and communal cooperation.

Education and healthcare access have improved in some regions, but poverty and economic instability remain concerns. Young people increasingly interact with Brazilian urban culture through schools and media.

The Xerente continue valuing ceremonies, oral tradition, and cultural celebrations. Evangelical believers among them can help strengthen discipleship and biblical leadership within their communities.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Xerente believe in having a deep connection to nature, ancestors, and ceremonial rituals. Spiritual leaders historically guided community rituals and healing practices.

Some Xerente communities have contact with Catholic and Protestant churches, though syncretism may still exist in certain areas. Traditional ceremonies continue influencing cultural life.

From an evangelical perspective, the Xerente need strong biblical teaching and mature Indigenous discipleship rooted in Jesus Christ and Scripture.

What Are Their Needs?

The Xerente people need support for education, healthcare, and protection of Indigenous rights and land. Young people especially need encouragement to preserve cultural identity.

Many families depend on agriculture and limited local trade. Sustainable opportunities for employment and community development are important needs.

They need strong Indigenous churches and leadership development. Xerente believers can become a Gospel witness to neighboring communities throughout central Brazil.
